{"id":959,"date":"2016-11-11T17:41:13","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T17:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/catherine-anne-warfield\/"},"modified":"2024-04-19T15:03:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T15:03:32","slug":"catherine-anne-warfield","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/catherine-anne-warfield\/","title":{"rendered":"Catherine Anne Warfield"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Catherine Anne Warfield<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The author of the poem, \u201cPewee Valley,\u201d was Catherine Anne Ware Warfield (1816-1877), another early Pewee resident (<a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/1879map\/\">see the c. 1890&nbsp;map<\/a>). A native of Natchez, Mississippi, she came to Kentucky at age 17 when she married Robert Elisha Warfield in 1833.<\/p>\n<p>Her husband was from a prominent Lexington family and was probably the son of Dr. Elisha Warfield, a professor of surgery and obstetrics at Transylvania University and a charter member of the Lexington Jockey Club. Dr. Warfield is known as the \u201cFather of Kentucky Turf,\u201d because he bred a bay colt named Darleymey that went on to become the greatest thoroughbred stallion of the 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine and Robert Elisha Warfield lived in the Lexington area until 1857, when financial difficulties forced them and their six children to move to a farm in Pewee Valley.<\/p>\n<p>During her lifetime, C.A. Warfield published two volumes of poetry with her sister, Eleanor Percy Lee, writing as \u201cTwo Sisters of the West.\u201d Her first and most popular novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.letrs.indiana.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=wright2;idno=Wright2-2636v1\">\u201cThe Household of Bouverie, or the&nbsp;Elixir of Gold,\u201d<\/a> was published anonymously in 1860. Some of her other novels included:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.letrs.indiana.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=wright2;idno=Wright2-2639\">\u201cThe Romance of the Green Seal\u201d<\/a>&nbsp; (1866);&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.letrs.indiana.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=wright2;idno=Wright2-2638\">\u201cThe Romance of Beauseincourt\u201d<\/a> (1867);&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.letrs.indiana.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=wright2;idno=Wright2-2637\">\u201cMiriam Monfort\u201d<\/a> (1873);&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.letrs.indiana.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=wright2;idno=Wright2-2635\">\u201cHester Howard\u2019s Temptation\u201d<\/a> (1875); and&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.letrs.indiana.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=wright2;idno=Wright2-2634\">\u201cA Double Wedding, or, How She Was Won\u201d<\/a> (1875).<\/p>\n<p>One of her children, Nathaniel W. Warfield (1834-1908), his wife, Alice Estill (1839-1926), and their son, Estill, are buried in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/pewee-valley-cemetery\/\">Pewee Valley Cemetery<\/a>. The 1880 U.S. Census shows Nathaniel and his wife living in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/rollington\/\">Rollington<\/a> district of Oldham County (probably on his parents\u2019 farm, which is on <a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/1879map\/\">the Pewee map<\/a>, with their three children: Stella, 17; Nathaniel, 11; and Estell (misspelled), 9.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1890s, the&nbsp;Warfield&#8217;s former&nbsp;home&nbsp;became&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlecolonel.com\/index.php\/marietawaring\/\">Jennie Casseday&#8217;s Rest Cottage for Working Women&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Page by&nbsp;Donna&nbsp; Russell<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catherine Anne Warfield The author of the poem, \u201cPewee Valley,\u201d was Catherine Anne Ware Warfield (1816-1877), another early Pewee resident (see the c. 1890&nbsp;map).
